Professor Edward Frankland, 1880. He became professor of chemistry in 1850 at the Royal College of Engineers, and in 1865 became professor of chemistry at the Royal School of Mines. He has been accredited with devising the theory of valence. He also undertook research into water purification and town drainage. He was knighted in 1897. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
