Letter from Warren Hastings, Governor-General of Bengal to his wife, 17th August 1780. Letter written from Calcutta on a Thursday morning by Hastings informing her of his duel with Philip Francis, Member of the Council. In a second letter to his wife written on the evening of the same day, he writes I now have the pleasure to tell you that Mr Francis is in no manner of danger, tha ball having passed through the muscular part of his back just bellow the shoulders, but without penetrating or injuring any of the bones. As you say 'Who knows what may happen?' Who can look into the seeds of time?' The detached signature is taken from another letter to his wife.
