The name Fauvel is derived from the first letters of Flaterie, Avarice, Vilanie, Variete, Envie, Laschete. The Roman de Fauvel was written an attack on the failings of the medieval church and the political establishment. A wood engraving from The Arts of the Middle Ages and at the Period of the Renaissance, by Paul Lacroix, (London, 1870).
