Caption
The Imperial Institute, South Kensington, London, 1899. Designed by Thomas Collcutt and opened in 1887, the Imperial Institute was intended to be a 'monument to the emerging imperial sentiment'. The buildings were demolished in the 1950s and 1960s after the institute closed, with the exception of the Queen's Tower, which still stands today on the campus of Imperial College. An engraving from James Taylor's "The Victorian Empire", William Mackenzie, (London, 1899).
