Caption

'Richard's shop soon became the fashion', 1750s, (1905). Richard Arkwright's barber shop undercut all the others. Arkwright, the Englishman credited with the invention of the water frame, worked as a barber until he was 28. Illustration from Our Island Story by H E Marshall, published by T C & E C Jack Ltd, (London and Edinburgh, 1905). The book gave a very biased and pro-British view of history.
