Rudolf Caracciola set a Class C (cars with engines of 3000-5000cc) Land Speed Record of 196.721 mph in this car in Hungary in October, 1934, thus beginning Mercedes' rivalry with Auto Union in speed record-breaking which would continue throughout the 1930s.
