Walthamstow Telephone exchange, London, 1910. Female telephonists at the switchboard. On the wall are instructions concerning calls for the fire brigade. The first of the General Post Office's (manual) telephone exchanges opened in London in 1902. The heavy demand for service led to the opening of a second exchange in November 1907.
