'Innocence betrayed, or the journey to London', plate I of The Harlot's Progress, 1732; shows Mary Hackabout arriving at the Bell Inn, Wood Street, London. She is greeted by Mother Needham, a notorious procuress. (The real Mother Needham had recently died, pelted to death in the pillory, and Hogarth had to substitute Mother Bentley, another famous procuress). Col Francis Charteris, gambler, seducer and rapist stands in the doorway. Fourth and final state of plate. One of a set of six plates.
