Amerigo Vespucci, born on the 9th March 1454 and died on the 22nd February 1512, was a merchant and navigator originally from Florence in Italy. He was the first to suggest that the East coast of South America was a new continent in spite of the beliefs of other navigators of the time, including Colombus, who thought to disembark from Asia. 19th Century engraving.
