Caption

Mary Ist of Scotland (Mary Stuart, or Mairi Ist in scottish gaelic) (8th December 1542 - 8th February 1587), also known as Mary, Queen of Scotland. She is sometimes confused with her cousin Mary Ist of England who reined at approximately the same time. She was, successively, Queen of Scotland after the death of her father, beginning almost from the date of her birth (she was just six days old), from the 14th December 1542 to the 24th July 1567. She took over as Queen of France at the age of 17, after her marriage to François II, from the 10th July 1559 to the 5th December 1560, Queen of France and Scotland: she is the only monarch to have been entitled to numerous titles. She was married three times: on the 24th April 1558, she married the French King François in Paris who became King on the 10th July 1559; on the 19th July 1565 she married Henry Stuart in Edinbourgh, Lord Darnley becoming the Duke of Albany and King Consort of Scotland as a result of the wedding; she married James Hepburn on the 14th May 1567, Count of Bothwell who became the Duke of Orkney.
