Catherine de Medici was born on the 13th April 1519 in Florence under the name of Catherine Mary Romola, and died on the 5th January 1589 in Blois. The daughter of Laurent II of Medicis (1492-1519), Duke of Urbino, and of Madeline of Tour d'Auvergne (1495-1519), she grew up in Italy, where she is originally from on her father's side. After the death of her parents, she inherited the titles of the Countess of Auvergne and the Duchess of Urbino. From her marriage with Henry II, she was Queen of France from 1547 to 1559. The mother of Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III, she governed France as Queen Mother and was regent of France from 1560 to 1564.
