Title

Lady Jeanne Grey.

Caption

Lady Jeanne Grey (October 1537 - 12th February 1554) was the Queen of England for nine days, from the 10th July 1553 to the 19th July 1553. Jeanne was the daughter of Henry Grey (1508-1554), marquis of Dorset, and Frances Brandon (1517-1559). Frances was the daughter of Marie (1496-1533), daughter of King Henry VII of England, and Charles Brandon, meaning Jeanne was an illegitimate child, as well as a Protestant. Her cousin, King Edward VI, chose her to succeed him, but she was in competition with Mary Tudor, the daughter of King Henry VIII. In 1553, she married Guildford Dudley, son of John Dudley, Juke of Northumberland. The Duke hoped to take power and to rule himself. Jeanne was quickly overuled. Mary Tudor did not want to put her to death, but, as a result of her ties with Spain, was not influential enough in her decision. Jeanne was beheaded at the Tower of London. Close up.
