Belle Ferronière.
Title

Belle Ferronière.

Caption

A portrait of a woman from the court of Milan, who had the name of Belle Ferronière as a result of the "ferronière" that the young woman is wearing, was probably painted between 1495 and 1500. It has been suggested that the woman in the picture was the mistress of the Duke of Sforza, Beatrice D'Este. The composition of the work is similar to that of the Mona Lisa: the subject is viewed from the side, showing prominently the elbows. However, the lighting in this work is much more prominent than in Leonardo Da Vinci's other works. The red dress of the young woman and the clarity of her face, contrasted with the sombre background, results in a striking contrast.
