The fatal battle of the Knight Roland (or Hroudland), marquis of the Marches of Brittany and the faithful, against a powerful Moorish army at the battle of Roncevaux. In 778, Charlemagne intervened in Spain and, depite a failure suffered on the part of the Vascons at Roncevaux by their rearguard, under the command of Roland, introduced as his nephew in the famous song named after him, he was responsable for several victories over the Sarrasins and succeeded in capturing the entirety of Catalonia. 19th Century engraving.
