Pepin the Short at the Field of Mars. Pepin III, better known under the name Pepin the Short, his surname owing to his short stature. Born around 715 in Jupille (near to Liège in Belgium, home to a good number of prestigious monarchs of the Marovingian and Carolingian dynasties), he died on the 24th September 768 in Saint-Denis (in the north of Paris). The youngest son of Charles Mantel at Rotrude of Trèves, he was: mayor of the Palace of Neustria (741-751), along with Bourgogne and Provence; mayor of the Palace of Austrasia (747-751), King of the Francs (751-768), father of Emperor Charlemagne (c. 742-814).
