Clovis 1st (in german Chlodwig or Chlodowech, in latin Chlodovechus), was King of the Franks from 481 to 511. Originating from the Merovingian dynasty, his name from his grandfather, Mérovée (see: list of French monarchs), he is considered to be, anachronistically, the first, official, Catholic King of France. 19th Century engraving.
