The storming of Trocadéro

Caption

31st August 1823. The storming of Trocadéro, based on artwork by Paul Delaroche. After the Congress of Verona (October-December 1822), during the events that took place at Chateaubriand, the "one hundred thousand sons of Saint Louis", originally from France, were able to re-establish absolutism in Spain. Two army legions broke away from the army's main body, one in the direction of Cologne and the other, heading towards Asturias, eventually coming to operate independant of each other. The mass of troops descended on Madrid, then on Cadiz, where the King and the Cortes had taken refuge. Cadiz was brought under siege. The legions under the control of marshals Moncey, Oudinot and Victor pursued the insurgency and instigated the surrender of the monarchy after the taking of the Palace of Trocadéro on the 23rd September.
