Palace of Versailles.

Caption

Palace of Versailles. Silenus, holding the young Bacchus, ancient statue. Sylvan creatures pertaining to Greek mythology, half man, half beast, satyrs and silenus were originially portrayed by boorish depictions of men, but with a tail, the ears of a horse and an erect penis. The use of two descriptive names has given rise to the popularisation of two contradictory explanations; according to some, the silenus is a greek term used in Asia Minor, and the term satyre is an indigenous greek term, both of them used to describe the same mythological creature; according to some, the silenus was half-man, half-horse, whilst the satyrs were half-man, half-goat.
