Caption

Statue in the Palace of Versailles. Papirius and his mother. Constructed in marble, and built by Martin Carlier and Michel Monier, with a height of 2.1 metres. The figure is based on a plaster casts based on Benoît Massou, Martin Carlier and Michel Monier, completed between 1685 and 1688. At first titled "The Peace Of the Greeks And Romans", it was later interpreted to be relating to the experience of a young Papirius, known also as Praetextatus, who, having been allowed to attend a meeting between his father and a Roman senate, later evaded the curiosity of his mother, whilst playing down his mother's inquiries as to whether it would be better for the State for one man to be with two women, or for one woman to have two husbands.
