The Louvre in Paris. The Courtyard of the Louvre. Statue of Claude Audran, painter (son of Claude Audran, born in Paris in 1597, died in Lyon in 1677), born in Lyon in 1641. He was graded best in his class at his school, Perrier, and in 1658 travelled to Paris, where he was permitted to work in the Queen's property, the address of which he was granted. Charles Lebrun, witness to Audran's time spent as a painter, employed him to draw out sketches of the painting "The Battle of Alexander". From this moment on, Audran's career was as an imitator of others' work, or, said in a better way, the subservient copyist for his new master: and as he did not seem to be able to reinterpret the painting in a different way to that of the original, his reputation suffered for it. In any case, the works of Claude Audran proved that he would have been able to uphold an honourable reputation as an artist amongst his contemporaries, had he been able to think and work of his own accord. He was accepted in to the Academy in 1675, and was depicted in a painting representing the Institution of the Eucharist, and became a teacher there in 1681. His main works were, amongst others; a Decollation of Saint Jean the Batist, Saint Denis, Saint Louis and " le Miracle des cinq pains", the chapel atop the Sceaux Castle, the great staircase in Versailles, the Tuileries gallery, etc. Claude Audran died in Paris, in 1684, at the age of 43, without ever having married.
