Peter Ernst II von Mansfield (often abbreviated to Ernst von Mansfield), was one of the most famous active soldiers at the start of the 30 years war. He was born around 1580 and died on the 29th November 1629 in Rakowitza, a town in Bosnia. He was the illegitimate son of Peter Ernst Mansfield, governor of Luxembourg and Brussels; he spent his youth in his father's Palace in Luxembourg at was educated in the Catholic faith. He took up a career as a soldier and fought first of all in Hungary under the command of his half-brother Charles (1543-1595), chief officer of the Germanic legion of the Holy Roman Emperor. He also served in the Netherlands under the Archduke Léopold, brother of the Emperor. For his contribution to the armed services, he was accredited by the Emperor Rodolphe II. However, it was not to be (he was deprived of his inheritanced by his father in the Netherlands) and he eventually succumbed to the control of his enemies, the Habsbourgs.
