Fidenza, duomo (Cathedral of San Donnino), sculptures between the main portal and the left one: “Adoration of the Magi and Joseph’s dream”. Work by Benedetto Antelami and workshop.
On the left, the three Magi pay homage to the blessing Child sitting on the lap of the Mother in majesty; next to the Madonna, St. Joseph, sitting in profile, sleeping.
On the right, in a landscape characterized by the presence of buildings, an angel flies to Joseph to speak to him in a dream. On the far right, in the lower part, two doves in a garden drink from a fountain resting on flowering clods that represent the land of Egypt.
On the two sandstone panels placed above the other two, a frame with five hanging arches is sculpted and under the central one – above the heads of the Madonna and Joseph – a disk in the shape of a millstone symbolizes the star that showed the way to the Magi.
On the arches, the following inscriptions are engraved in capital letters: CASPAR . BALTA SAR . MELCHIOR MARIA . IHVS IOSEP. +S[VR]GE . ACIPE PVERV . 7MATREM . EJ . ETVADE / . INE / GIP /TV (Gaspar Baltassar Melchior Maria Iesus Ioseph +Surge accipe puerum et matrem ejus et vade in Aegyptum[Mt 2,13]).
