Fidenza, duomo (Cathedral of San Donnino), sculptures between the main portal and the left one near the niche with the “King David” by Benedetto Antelami.
Detail of the “Stories of Saint Donnino” with the first and second episode. In the left panel, the scene is depicted outside a building under which stands an armed guard.
Donnino, cubicularius of Maximianus Herculeus, standing to the right of the emperor, places the crown on his head; to the left of Maximian the Sword-Bearer shows that the scene constitutes a moment of the exercise of the sovereign power of jurisdiction, probably towards the character placed on the far right. In the adjacent frame placed above is engraved in capital letters the inscription: IR . ABEATO . DOMNINO CORONATVR (Imperator a Beato Domnino coronatur = The Emperor is crowned by the blessed Donnino).
In the panel on the right, the distinction from the previous scene is made clear not only by the different colour of the stone, but also by a polygonal crenellated tower beyond which the emperor in majesty is seated with the royal insignia, next to whom Donnino stands in profile with his hands clasped in an act of “petition” and behind him two other figures – dressed like him – raise their hands in assent. On the adjacent upper frame is engraved in capital letters the inscription: LICENCIA . ACEPTA . DEO . SERVIREDECRE[VIT] (Licencia acepta Deo serve decrevit = Having received permission, he decided to serve God).
