Fidenza, duomo (Cathedral of San Donnino), right tower (Trabucco Tower), west front:“The Flight of Alexander the Great”.
A legend taken from the Romance of Alexander by Pseudo-Callisthenes tells that Alexander, in order to take flight, attached two griffins to his chariot; then he impaled two large pieces of meat on two spears in such a way that, by holding them up, the griffins, in their desire to grab the meat, were forced to soar in flight, thus dragging the chariot upwards.
The subject was traditionally considered “Berta who spins”.
Work by Benedetto Antelami and workshop.
