“The Expulsion of the Bonacolsi”, by Domenico Moroni, egg tempera on canvas, 1494.
The painting was commissioned to Domenico Morone by the fourth Marquis of Mantua, Francesco II Gonzaga. It illustrates the victorious battle that Luigi I Gonzaga fought in Mantua on August 16, 1328, against Rinaldo Bonacolsi for possession of the city.
The work depicts both the raging battle in the main square (now Piazza Sordello), as recounted by ancient chroniclers, and the city's architecture as it appeared at the time Morone painted it, with its towers, palaces, and square. In the background. in the center, Mantua Cathedral appears, with its late-Gothic façade by the Venetian architect Jacobello dalle Masegne, adorned with sculptures by his brother Pierpaolo and Giacomino da Pavia.
