Medici Riccardi Palace, Gallery of Mirrors (or Room Luca Giordano): “The Allegory of Fortitude”, detail of the vault.
Frescoes by Luca Giordano, 1682 - 1685.
Virtue is depicted armed with a staff and shield, flanked by a lion and Constance (with her hand on a burning brazier). Above her are Honor, who offers her a laurel wreath, and Victory, seated on a globe in the act of offering a pomegranate; while Peace descends from the sky, with an olive branch and a torch to burn weapons. In the foreground are Courage, depicted as an archer (figure of Hercules) strangling a snake, with a fox on the ground trampled by a winged putto. On the left, always at the bottom, are Misery and Fear, crouched under a skin of deer.
