“Ritrovamento delle tre croci e verifica della Croce”, da “Le storie della Vera Croce”; affresco di Piero della Francesca (1452-1466).
La madre di Costantino, Elena ha fatto scavare il terreno sul Golgota e ritrovato la croce di Gesù e quelle dei due ladroni. Non riuscendo a capire quale possa essere quella su cui fu inchiodato Cristo, Elena le fa esporre tutte e tre sopra il cadavere di un giovane appena defunto, che risorge miracolosamente allorché viene a contatto con la sacra reliquia. A quel punto Elena e il suo seguito si inginocchiano in adorazione.

Constantine's mother, Elena had the ground on Golgotha dug and found the cross of Jesus and those of the two thieves. Unable to understand which could be the one on which Christ was nailed, Elena has them all exposed above the corpse of a recently deceased young man, who miraculously resurrects when he comes into contact with the sacred relic. Then Elena and her entourage kneel in adoration.
