Particolare della parte superiore con statua di Cristo in Croce. Alle spalle la figura del pellicano, che nella simbologia cristiana è emblema di Gesù Cristo. Spesso le sue piume sono tinte di rosso per il sangue delle prede e questo particolare ha probabilmente diffuso la credenza che si lacerasse il corpo pur di conservare in vita i piccoli. il sangue che il pellicano sparge è il sangue che Cristo dalla croce effonde purificando dal peccato tutti gli uomini.

La Croce è uno splendido esempio di oreficeria rinascimentale, scolpita in lamina d’argento, cesellata e smaltata da Betto di Francesco Betti, Antonio del Pollaiolo e Miliano di Domenico Dei tra il 1457 e il 1459 circa. Venne commissionata a completamento dell’altare d’argento. La Croce-ostensorio è composta da tre parti principali distinte: il Crocifisso, il fusto e la base.

Detail of the upper part with statue of crucified Christ. Behind, the figure of the pelican, which in Christian symbolism is the emblem of Jesus Christ. Often its feathers are dyed red due to the blood of the prey and this detail has probably spread the belief that it lacerated the body in order to keep the young alive. the blood that the pelican sheds is the blood that Christ sheds from the cross, purifying all men from sin.

The Cross is a splendid example of Renaissance jewelery, sculpted in silver foil, chiseled and enameled by Betto di Francesco Betti, Antonio del Pollaiolo and Miliano di Domenico Dei between 1457 and 1459 approximately. It was commissioned to complete the silver altar. The Cross-monstrance is made up of three distinct main parts: the Crucifix, the stem and the base.
