Perugia, National Gallery of Umbria: "Mystic Lamb and Madonna of the Recommended", Umbrian painter of the first quarter of the fifteenth century. Tempera and gold background on panel.
The painting was commissioned during one of the many plagues that plagued Perugia: the Madonna with her large mantle protects a group of faithful, headed by Augustinian monks, from the darts of the plague hurled by Christ. The invocation to the Madonna against the divine scourge is also remembered by the prayer that runs, in gold letters, along the whole almond that encloses the figuration.
On the left the strong references to the Apocalypse: Mount Golgotha at whose feet is the Mystic Lamb, with the stigmata, slumped over the book of the Apocalypse whose seals are almost all open except one. The presence of the flagella nailed to the arms of the cross and the quarterdeck of Porta Sant’Angelo, depicted below, may lead us to suppose that this table actually came from the oratory of the disciplined Saint Augustine, adjacent to the church.
