Modica: view of the Cathedral of St George
The Cathedral of St George is the symbol of the Sicilian Baroque. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and it is the final result of the six / eighteenth century reconstruction, following the disastrous earthquakes that struck Modica in 1542, in 1613 and in 1693 (the most devastating); slight damage was caused by the earthquakes in the Iblea area that occurred during the eighteenth century and in 1848.
