On 6 October 1973, the Jewish high holiday of Yom Kippur, Egypt and Syria attacked Israel. The goal was to win back lost Arab territory from preceding wars, namely the Israeli-occupied territories of Sinai (Egypt) and the Golan Heights (Syria). The war ended with a ceasefire on 22 October when Israel had reconquered all territories. The three week war cost the lives of 15,000 Egyptians, 3,500 Syrians and 2,700 Israelis.
