Men of the Reich Labour Service with shouldered spades walk to a construction site (undated). The Reich Labour Service was founded in 1935 under the impression of unemployment and obliged all Germans from the age of 18 to 25 to a period of six months of labour service. After the beginning of the war, the obligated men were deployed as construction troops of the Wehrmacht.
