Illustration from the 'Divine Comedy', Inferno (Hell), Canto VI : Dante and Virgil find themselves in the third circle where the gluttonous are punished under a continual and heavy storm of hail, snow and discolored water. Ciacco foretells the divisions with which Florence is about to be distracted. On left, Cerberus (with his threefold throat) rends the spirits into piecemeal.
