Begun on July 25, 1937 at the Cantieri Riuniti del Adriatico shipyards in Monfalcone (near Trieste, Frioul, Italy) and put into service on April 28, 1940, it was the first modern 35,000-ton battleship built and put into service in Europe. It belonged to a class of four battleships.
