Otto von Guericke carried out the Magdeburg hemispheres experiment in front of Emperor Ferdinand III of Habsburg: by creating an artificial vacuum in two hollow hemispheres connected to two 15-horse carriages, he proved that it was virtually impossible to separate them, demonstrating the action of atmospheric pressure.
