Info+

In 1908, sailors discovered a barrel washed up on the beach, still in good condition. They opened it and found that it contained rum. Delighted with their find, they took it back in a cart, but on the way, the barrel fell and broke. They then discovered that the rum they had started drinking was actually used to preserve the corpse of a monkey. The unfortunate sailors became the laughing stock of all the inhabitants of Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, who soon nicknamed them the "monkey brandy drinkers".
