Lise Meitner portrait around 1940, USA Lise Meitner (7 or 17 November 1878 - 27 October 1968) was one of the most important female scientists of the 20th century. She became a professor of physics in 1926 and was the first woman in Germany to achieve this. Despite her importance and significant contributions to the nuclear fission of atoms, Lise Meitner did not receive a Nobel Prize, unlike her long-term research partner Otto cock. She worked with Otto cock for a good 30 years. Due to her Jewish descent, Lise Meitner lost her teaching licence in Germany in 1933. In 1938, after the annexation of Austria, the Austrian fled to Sweden. Lise Meitner refused to take part in research into the construction of an atomic bomb, as she did not see it as her task to make weapons of mass destruction possible
