The OncoRay - National Centre for Radiation Research in Oncology today receives the world's first single-source photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT) in radiotherapy. This system counts every single X-ray photon that passes through the patient, enabling the acquisition of more detailed images with more anatomical and functional information. Until now, however, the procedure could only be used for immobile tumours, e.g. in the head or pelvis. This gap is now to be closed using the new PCCT technology. Siemens Healthineers introduced this fundamentally new CT detector technology in 2021, but until now it has only been used for diagnostic purposes in radiology. At the end of May this year, Siemens Healthineers launched the next generation of PCCT scanners, which are now also approved for radiotherapy. The world's first single-source photon-counting CT of this generation (NAEOTOM Alpha.Prime) is being used at OncoRay in a line of radiotherapy scanners
