“Night Witches.” Chaldej photographed female pilots Nadezhda Popova and Irina Sebrova during the war in 1943 and later, in 1970, he photographed them again. Soviet Union 1970 Night Witches was the nickname of the Soviet 588th Night Bomb Air Regiment, which consisted exclusively of woman. They flew Polikarpov Po-2 biplanes, a wooden and fabric aircraft developed in 1927/28. Since they mostly attacked at night and switched off the engine, they were silent and the bombs fell out of nowhere, hence the nickname 'Night Witches'
