La rotie, a quirky French wedding custom. After the wedding reception, the bride and groom traditionally retire to their wedding bed. In the early hours of the morning, a group of unmarried wedding guests (often accompanied by a great deal of noise, drumming or music) storm into the bedroom. They bring the newlyweds a chamber pot filled with a mixture that looks deliberately unappetising but is actually nutritious. The newlyweds are woken up in bed and forced to be the first to drink from this chamber pot, symbolically proving that they are ready for the intimacy and the unvarnished realities of married life. Illustration, reproduction of a 19th-century original. Authentic, file restored for optimal use, exact date of the original unknown, historical
