22 June 1941, the first day of the war and the start of ‘Operation Barbarossa', the German Wehrmacht's attack on the Soviet Union. In Moscow, residents learn of the situation from Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov. His speech was broadcast over loudspeakers in Moscow. J. Chaldej on this photograph: ‘I returned from a business trip that morning and walked from the station to my flat at 12 Leontyevsky Lane. The German Embassy was right next door to us at 10 Leontyevsky Lane. Lots of people were carrying suitcases and bags into the embassy. It looked as though they'd packed in a great hurry. I didn't understand what was going on. I went into my building, in front of which three men from the KGB were standing, checking my passport. The landlord (I'd only rented a bed from him) couldn't tell me what was going on either. He said, ‘Come on, let's go to the banya (Russian sauna) .' In the banya, everything was as usual. We had a steam bath and then sat down in the bar for a glass of beer
