Budapest, soldiers on the street, 1945 World War II. Liberation of Budapest. The Battle of Budapest lasted from October 29, 1944 to February 13, 1945. On December 25, 1944, Soviet troops succeeded in completely enclosing Budapest. Around 33, 000 German soldiers and 37, 000 Hungarian soldiers allied with them still resisted in the cauldron. Around 800, 000 civilians were still living in the city at that time
