From 1939, tens of thousands of prisoners of war were interned in the German Wehrmacht's Stalag IVB POW camp near Mühlberg/Elbe. By the end of the war, around 3, 000 of them had lost their lives, 2, 350 of them Soviet soldiers alone. In September 1945, the Soviet secret police NKVD set up Special Camp No. 1 Mühlberg/Elbe on the site. Until the camp was dissolved in September 1948, a total of around 22, 000 German civilian prisoners were interned there. Among them were minor and mid-level functionaries of the NSDAP, but also many who were arrested arbitrarily and often on the basis of denunciations. All prisoners suffered under inhumane prison conditions. Hunger and disease claimed around 6, 800 lives between 1945 and 1948, Neuburxdorf, Brandenburg, Germany
