Floating worker. Floating is a way of transporting timber in flowing waterways from the forests in the interior of northern Sweden to downstream mines and sawmills, which were often located on the coast. The timber was allowed to follow the flowing water in rivers. Flotation in Sweden is said to have started on a larger scale during the 14th and 15th centuries in connection with the rise of mining and the need for large quantities of wood for ore mining and iron production.
