After the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, Sir Walter Raleigh was arrested at the Exeter Inn in Ashburton, Devon, and imprisoned in the Tower of London on 19 July. On 17 November, Raleigh was charged with high treason for his alleged involvement in the conspiracy against King James.
