Portrait of Thomas Mann during his Munich years at the end of the 18th century, Germany Thomas Mann (6 June 1875 - 12 August 1955) was one of the most important writers of the 20th century. In 1929 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his work. His most famous works are Buddenbrooks, Death in Venice, The Magic Mountain, Joseph and His Brothers and Doctor Faustus. As an opponent of the National Socialists, he emigrated to Switzerland in 1933 and to the USA in 1938, where he became a citizen in 1944
