Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev, 3 June 1961, Austria John Fitzgerald Kennedy, JFK (29 May 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts - to his assassination on 22 November 1963 in Dallas, Texas) was one of the most important American presidents. He was a member of the Democratic Party. His presidency during the 'Cold War' was characterised by many crises: Construction of the Berlin Wall, Cuban Missile Crisis, escalation of the Vietnam War, African-American civil rights movement. He campaigned for the abolition of racial segregation in the southern states and pursued a policy of détente.
