The Emscher has been completely free of wastewater since January 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer containing rainwater and wastewater. Parks and gardens in the Ruhr area. Nordsternpark is a landscaped park on the site of the former Nordstern colliery in Gelsenkirchen. Following the closure of Nordstern colliery in 1993, the site was completely renovated and transformed into a landscape park. The Federal Garden Show was held in the park in 1997.
