Walter Gropius was an important German architect and the founder of the legendary Bauhaus in Weimar. He took on American citizenship in 1944. He had to emigrate in 1934 because his revolutionary past at the end of the First World War, as well as his ideas and commitment, threatened persecution by the National Socialists.
