Caption
Portrait of a woman from the Ramnami caste (Chhattisgarh, India), As a sign of devotion, Ramnami people used to tattoo their body and their face with the name of Rama, one of the main hindu god. Nowadays, this tradition is disappearing. Indeed, few of them are still tattooed, the younger generation fearing discrimination. The caste (or sect) is born in the end of the 19th century as a way to protest against the supremacy of the higher classes in the hindu hierarchical system. Comprised of low caste hindus, they dont accept the caste system, they practise a form of bhakti (devotion) dedicated to the god Rama
